Eigo Noto and How to Use it Effectively
Starting in 2009, 5th and 6th grade children around Japan will be required to take an English class and to aid their new would-be English teachers, the Ministry of Education has produced a new book called Eigo Noto (English Note(s)). The book is divided into two levels with level one for 5th grade and level two for 6th grade. The book also comes with a multimedia cd which is really just an interactive version of the book.
Eigo Noto isn't without its faults though. For ALT's (assistant language teachers), the teacher's guide is entirely in Japanese. And with the listening and interactive CD's, there really isn't too much for the ALT to do besides hit the play button.
While it may be easy to criticize Eigo Noto, it's a wast of time so instead I'll offer some tips on how to get the most out of using Eigo Noto. A side benefit is of course the ALT will get to be more involved in class.
Before we get into the tips, let's look at a basic Eigo Noto lesson. Lessons are generally divided into four different kinds of activities: Let's Listen, Let's Chant/Sing, Let's Play and finally Activities.
Many Let's Listen activities are dialogs on the CD. Instead of just listening to the CD, the HRT or Home Room Teacher and ALT could perform the dialogs as mini-skits. This also encourages the students because they'll gain confidence by watching their HRT trying to speak English.
Playing games or what Eigo Noto calls Let's Play has to be my favorite part of teaching. Lead the games as the Game Master and most importantly, have fun!
For the singing and chanting activities, the ALT can lead a quick practice session before singing or chanting. Using the Alphabet song (Eigo Noto Level 2, Lesson 1) as an example, the ALT could say each letter and then have the students repeat. This give the ALT a quick chance to catch any mistakes with pronunciation like the letter "C" versus "Shi."
Many of the activities involve writing and a lot of the writing activities are in Japanese. Before class, the ALT can complete their own activity (in English) and then use that to model the instructions for that activity. For example, if the activity is to draw a picture, and describe what they eat for breakfast, then the ALT could draw a picture of his breakfast along with a description. This way the students are getting a very visual introduction to the activity but also hearing about it in English.
While it's always easy to criticize something, criticism doesn't really help in the classroom and to that I have offered some tips to hopefully help those in need. Eigo Noto, like any other book, is a tool and a tool can only be as effective as the one who wields it.

Deferment Options For Student Loans
In this modern age the system of employment and education demands that people obtain higher qualifications in order to get a better job; this means that most students have to rely on some form of student loan. If you do obtain a student loan there are several ways to defer making payments back to the lender; it is worth remembering about paying back the funds at the time of applying for the student loan. But in Blogger, once you have published the post, you cannot change the URL of the post. Publish the post using only the keyword in the title. Later on you can edit and change the title again if you want. You can change the title but it should still contain the keyword.
